9K a year 5 days ago 5 days ago 5 days ago The Ohio State University at Mansfield is accepting applications for an Instructional Assistant in Chemistry for a 75% staff appointment.
Although this could shift, the job will be close to full time (35-40 hours per week) in Fall and Spring, with very few hours (0-5 hours per week) over the summer.
Under direction of the Associate Dean or an assigned supervisor, this Instructional Assistant will provide support to Chemistry faculty that includes management and preparation of labs associated with Chemistry offerings including Organic Chemistry, safety oversight, and purchasing and maintaining supplies and equipment.
Duty Description 30% Meet with faculty do discuss lab protocols and organize lab set ups.
Maintain laboratory, preparation room, and storerooms in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
Assist instructors, staff, and students in the purchase and use of equipment, materials, and supplies (including research to make recommendations when needed).
Provide technical support for faculty developing new activities/experiments and writing protocols.
20% Oversee appropriate handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, hazardous chemicals, and chemical wastes.
Communicate records of chemical waste to the OSU-Mansfield safety officer.
Promote and practice safety procedures in labs and attend occasional safety workshops.
20% Order, receive, catalog, and store materials, chemicals, glassware, instructional equipment, maintain inventories, ensuring that adequate quantities are available for timely instructional use.
Mark chemicals, glassware, and other equipment with appropriate identification and safety information.
Prepare materials and equipment for instructional use as required according to approved procedures.
Test, adjust, and maintain (including minor repair and adjustments) of a wide variety of complex laboratory instruments.
20% Conduct some instructional work as requested such as assisting in laboratory instruction, grading student laboratory reports, tutoring students, and seeking professional development to enhance knowledge and skills in the discipline and in teaching strategies 10% Perform other duties as assigned including but not limited to attending campus events for students, maintaining department documents, records, and files, watering in the greenhouse if help is needed, assisting with other science labs (engineering, physics, biology, anthropology) if needed and if time allows.
Minimum Education:
Bachelor Degree in Chemistry or another science field.

Masters Degree
Experience:
Post-secondary experience in science labs preferred.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
